Perhaps one of the most famous and least understood denizens of Valenth, the leupak is a bizarre and wildly variable reptilian beast-- and a living testament to the mysterious power of the Fatis Mirajin. Created by the Dreamwaker and his most trusted underlings as guardians, companions, and servants, it is extremely rare for any two leupaks to ever look identical. Size, shape, color, adornments and even flesh characteristics depend upon a leupak's facet or bloodline--and those who fall victim to the creatures' mutagenic venom often develop random characteristics of their own. Despite all their fluidity as a species, all leupaks share a collection of common traits; round, rubbery bodies, long, hollow tongues tipped with prehensile claws, external rotational ears, venom glands and egg sacs in both genders. Their eggs are parasitic, and require a host for proper development (a small percentage of leupaks can force their eggs to develop without a host; see leupak eggs for more on this). Naturally-born leupaks also possess facets; a crystalline third-eye structure that serves as an energy focus and a container for the thought that formed them. Being one of the only known creatures created by the Mirajin itself (instead of being a mutant), many of those who work closely with leupaks consider them mirajin elementals. There may very well be some truth in this statement, as their venom is the greatest source of natural mirajin to be found outside of the Reverie. |
