Among the Aeneski, the varworg are known as the primordial and bloodthirsty children of the moon; an ancient race of creatures who took the guise of both man and wolf. The powerful lunar magics that created the varworg linger in their bodies, cursing those who survive being bitten to join their ranks. Alchemical remedies exist, but their success depends on rapid treatment; the same herbs that stave off the curse are also powerfully toxic to full-blown werewolves, and hesitation could kill the victim instead of curing them. Any humanoid can become a varworg, and any varworg can spread the curse through a bite. When a person is transforming into a varworg, their size and muscle mass in humanoid form increase, and they grow distinctive fangs and claws; their eyes glow when the light catches them. Young varworg cannot control when they change; the light of the moon forces them into the distinctive bipedal wolf form, and they cannot revert until the moon sets or is blocked by the clouds. All varworg are dangerously wild and violent in wolf form, though their rage settles somewhat after having dined on fresh meat. Older varworg have enough control to avoid attacking loved ones, but the scent of blood drives them into a frenzy, and the wounded are in grave danger when in proximity of a hungry werewolf, regardless of identity. Varworg often gather a pack of other, weaker varworg, dirworg or lapsworg, and normal wolves. Organized varworg packs function much like natural wolf packs, with an alpha pair leading the rest, each subsequent lesser rank keeping the one beneath it in check with power plays and shows of dominance. It is not uncommon for solitary varworg to be in the service of viadante and vampires, though the beasts are naturally wary of the undead. |
